Located in the Ambelokipi district of Athens, this 55 sq.m. apartment occupies a typical post-war apartment building dating from the 1960s. Like many residences of its era, the original layout was defined by a sequence of compartmentalized rooms, a generously proportioned entrance hall, and a long internal corridor that devoted a significant portion of the apartment’s footprint to circulation rather than habitation.

The intervention sought not to alter the fundamental character of the dwelling, but to reveal its latent spatial potential. By carefully reconfiguring the interior layout, circulation space was reduced and redistributed to the living areas, allowing the apartment to function more efficiently while maintaining the clarity of its original structure. The resulting plan organizes the private rooms into a compact and cohesive arrangement, while the shared living spaces unfold in a simple L-shaped configuration that enhances openness, flexibility, and everyday use.

The renovation follows an approach that has informed several of the studio’s projects within Athenian apartment buildings: the removal of later additions and superfluous partitions in order to recover the spatial qualities of the original architecture. Existing timber floors were preserved wherever possible and extended into adjoining areas, establishing a continuous surface throughout the apartment. New joinery, crafted from oak veneer and lacquered wood, complements the existing material palette and contributes to a calm and understated interior atmosphere.

Rather than imposing a new architectural language, the project engages in a dialogue with the building’s inherited fabric. Through a series of measured interventions, the apartment is adapted to contemporary patterns of living while retaining the warmth, familiarity, and material character that define the post-war Athenian home
